Question: If the conductors of a type NM cable are damaged in a box by a drywall router such that there is less than 6 in. of conductor, can the conductor be extended with a splice or must the cable be replaced?

Answer: A splice is permitted to extend the conductor.

Explanation: Section 300.14 was modified in the 2023 NEC to clarify the 6 in. of free conductor required can be spliced or unspliced.
