What’s Wrong Here? Hint: Close, But Not Quite Right

Think you know how this installation violates the NEC?

Hint: Close, but not quite right.

At first, I thought this installation was Code-compliant. But upon closer examination, I realized there was a problem. The installer used a compression connector to secure the raceway to the box. For general applications, Sec. 314.23(F) requires the use of two or more conduits threaded into the box to serve as the means of support. Although, Exception No. 2 lists six very particular rules that permit using one unbroken length of RMC or IMC to support a box used for luminaire or lampholder support. This installation seems to comply with the first five requirements, but not the 6th. The 6th and final requirement states that the conduit itself, rather than a conduit connector, must be threaded wrenchtight into the box in which the luminaires are installed. If you look closely at the photo, you may be able to spot the connector on the end of the raceway.
