What’s Wrong Here? Hint: Squeeze Play

Think you know how this installation violates the NEC?

Hint: Squeeze play

Section 314.17(B)(2) requires cables with nonmetallic sheaths (such as NM cables or the UF cable used in this installation) to be secured to the box except where the cable enters a box through a protective conduit or tubing sleeve as specified in Sec. 300.15(C). This UF cable is sandwiched between the luminaire canopy and the pancake-style box as a means to secure it. I don’t think that was the intent of Sec. 314.17(B)(2). Using a box with a cable connector or cable clamp would have been the correct choice here. Section 225.10(19) permits UF cable as an outside wiring method on the surface of buildings and structures, but pinching the cable between the luminaire canopy and the box was certainly not the best way to do this. Because the luminaire is not sitting flush against the surface, I think moisture and water will be more likely to enter this enclosure causing problems with the wire connections.
